Waiter Tray Receiving
Easy
Waiter Tray Receiving is an introductory activity to drill receiving or outfield skills during the Quick Defense portion of practice. The goal of this drill is to familiarize your athletes with the “palm up” glove position used to catch a fly ball (ball overhead). Often times, young ballplayers struggle “turning the glove up,” which can be a major safety hazard as the athlete is unable to catch a ball at or over the head.
EXECUTION – First athlete steps in front of the line-cone and positions the glove in the “waiter-tray” position. Coach stands 5-10 feet away from athlete and tosses ball up and over the glove side shoulder. Each athlete attempts 3-4 tosses, then rotates. Go through line 3-4 times, depending on pace and time.
DC KEYS –
- Stand Close to Control Toss – Accuracy is key here to ensure that athletes build confidence and comfort with glove-up receiving.
- Away from Head – Start predictably on the glove side, then predictably across the head. Finish by making your toss directly over the athletes head.
- Connect It! Can this drill, run as Quick Defense activity, be combined outfield or fly ball drill during station instruction?
