Touchdown Tommy’s
Medium
Touchdown Tommy’s can be run as an Outfield drill during station instruction, or as a Conditioning drill at the end of practice. It is a fun way to work on catching fly balls on the run and can be exhausting at the same time.
EXECUTION – Drill is run in the outfield, typically from foul-line to foul-line. The distance covered can depend on your goal (OF vs. COND). Start the athletes behind the foul line, each with a baseball. Jog to coach @ 50% sprint, toss the baseball and execute a football pattern @ 100%, continue through opposite foul line @ 50% sprint. To keep the drill moving, have the next athlete leave on previous athletes toss to coach.
DC KEYS
- Run on the Balls of the Feet – This keeps the head still, which keeps the ball still. Goal is to avoid the visually bouncing baseball.
- Careful with Competition – Involving “defensive backs” can be fun, but can also lead to trampling or other physical contact.
- FUN – Unleash the kid inside you. Come on out Al Bundy… errr, Peyton Manning!
