Sac Bunt Competition
Medium
Sac Bunt Competition is best run as a side station during batting practice. It’s a chance to reinforce bunting fundamentals through a fun competition. In DC practice plans, this drill is carried out two practices after Fundamentals: Bunting. Therefore, coaches will want to start with all athletes working through fundamentals at the same time:
- Back Foot Pivot – Back foot rotates as batter assumes athletic bunting position
- Knees Bend – Bend at the knees and use legs to adjust pitch height
- Hands Adjust – Turtle Bite!!!
Use this competition to explain more baseball principles associated with bunting – specifically, the Sacrifice Bunt. See DC Keys below for more explanation on principles to teach. Realize that the Sac Bunt Competition combines fun with performance under pressure. This is a powerful teaching tool!
EXECUTION – Sac Bunt Competition is created using 4 cones: Foul line, between mound and foul line (1st base side), between mound and foul line (3rd base side), and opposite foul line. Whether run on a diamond, or on open grass/dirt, use this cone set-up to create two sets of goal posts for scoring points. Break athletes into two teams and keep a cumulative point total for “goals scored.” Work through three rounds of competition:
- @ P / @ 1B / @ 3B
- POINTS FOR GOALS SCORED
DC KEYS
- Teach Why – Runner on 1B: Bunt is to 1B because he has to hold the runner on (essentially most room). Runner on 2B: Bunt is to 3B because he has to respect the 3B bag (1B can cheat in).
- Sacrifice = Give Yourself Up!
- Bunt Strikes – Advanced bonus for older bunter.
