Fundamentals: Rundowns
Medium
A DC Fundamentals segment, Run Downs are defined as when the defense has a runner caught between two bases. Goal is to explain and teach proper execution of a run-down (in a perfect world). DC teaches under the philosophy that any run-down should be approached as a “free out”, to be handled and completed in one throw. Simply returning the baserunner to his previous base is a lost opportunity.
EXECUTION – The following execution points are to be drilled and will then be used and coaches in any Rundown Drill variation as the season continues:
- Create Throwing Lane – This is done to the arm side of the athlete to allow for dart throw without hitting baserunning.
- Show the Baseball – Avoid pump fakes, but show the baseball to runner and receiver. Reminder to place hand with baseball into glove for any tag.
- Force a Commit – Must force athlete to turn and run.
- Peel off Arm Side – Baserunners are taught to seek contact. Once dart throw is released, continue to peel off in the direction of the throwing arm and replace receiver at that base.
DC KEYS
- Go hard – DC teaches a 95% or “one click below full sprint.” Doing this is the key to any rundown as the baserunner is forced to turn his back to the defender and run. It becomes impossible to stop, change direction, and accelerate away from the closing bagman. If the baserunner is allowed to stay athletic and side-shuffle, the baserunners ability to change direction is enhanced greatly.
- Avoid the Ball Fake – DC has found that while ball fakes may work to deceive the baserunner… they also work to deceive your teammate and receiver!
- Philosophy – Any rundown situation is a free defensive out and should be approached that way. On paper, OUR TEAM will get that out… and execute the rundown in one throw!
