Five Feeds Drill
Hard
The Five Feeds Drill is an infield drill run in small space, either the 2B or SS area. Coach can run all five movements for a challenging infield activity, or coach-down the drill to two feeds (underhand flip and overhand dart) and finish with a double-play turn.
EXECUTION – The Five Feeds Drill involves one live athlete, two receivers (also making ball piles), and a short line waiting on deck. Start the pace slowly and allow the athletes to practice all five feeds and grow comfortable with the order / rhythm of the movements. In time, speed up the pace and involve throws to a target net or “special” object. Set up one cone for a line, two cones for the live athlete to shuffle between, and another two cones for two more athletes to receive feeds and make ball piles. Work through four feeds and a double-play turn before rotating clockwise (live to left ball pile, to line, to right ball pile, to live).
DC KEYS
- Perry the Paint Can – Involve a fun target for the athletes to fire at. A catch net is fine, with points based on accurate throws. But watch how locked-in all athletes will be if theres a paint can, stuffed animal, or other non-traditional target to blast.
- Challenging and Novel – This drill is tough, involves lots of cool execution, and provides the opportunity to train feeds not normally attempted (backhand flip)
- Small Space, Many Involved – Great drill to run in tight quarters. How engaged can you maintain all athletes.
- Push Ups for Passed Balls – Any GBs through the legs result in five push ups, but only once back at line.
