Field Goal Hitting
Easy
Field Goal Hitting is a fun hitting drill to encourage and promote working the opposite field and up the middle. Run Field Goal Hitting on the main diamond, while additional batting practice stations are offered in a bullpen or foul territory. The structure of this drill ensures that every athlete is busy, something very important to ramp up the fun-factor. In addition, it provides the opportunity to see each hitter as a head coach. One-by-one, the hitters will rotate through your station. That means you have the opportunity to provide instruction specific to where THEY are at in their development. This might be a grip and stance adjustment for one hitter… while another hitter might be working on swing path.
EXECUTION – Field Goal Hitting is run on the main diamond with three sets of “goals” set up in the infield dirt. A points competition is run with each athlete earning points for “goals” scored through the color-coded cones. Take 6 swings per athlete and tally the total points earned:
- Three Sets of Goals – Color coded cones with the highest point value placed on opposite field (switch points for RH and LH hitters).
- Points Competition – Running tally of points earned per batted ball.
- Individual Rotation – Run this drill with an individual rotation. Depending on the number of “other” stations:
Defensive Positions (4-6) –> On-Deck Cages –> Live Cages –> On-Deck Points –> Live Points
DC KEYS
- Money Ball – Place a catch net either immediately behind 2nd base bag, or in the center of the opposite-side goal (requires an adult to move the catch net)
- Find the Barrel – Pitch to contact for this drill – we WANT contact! Not throwing shutouts here 😉
- Soft Toss to Spots – Toss the ball outside and deep in the strike zone to start swing development (physical instruction, not necessarily mental).
